#National Security & Search for True Leadership: Traditional Institute Considered As Fourth Arm of Government

Indeed Nigeria is ripe to have a chapter in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the traditional institution.The entire black race is quite unique and what can strive in the white dorminated part of the world cannot hold in the black dorminated areas. This being the reason why it is time to give recognition to the traditional institution in Nigeria.

Traditional Rulers after a recent meeting with PMB.

It is a fact that,since the technical withdrawal of traditional institution from the affairs of things in Nigeria way back to 1967 from not being part of security architecture and turning them to ceremonial entity has made Nigeria easy prey for all sorts of criminalities reasons being that:

i- Nigeria has vast land.
ii- Nigeria has close neighbours with similar idiosyncracies in which case it is the traditional institution that can easily identify them.
iii- the 1976 Local Government Reform was more or less a blessing in disguise.
iv- Giving constitutional responsibilities to traditional institution in Nigeria as the fourth Arm of government is likely to improve greatly the socio-politico status of Nigeria and general welfare.

Essentially there are three areas that traditional institutions are to focus upon if given the role and there are:

a- In the Northern states,one of their focal area is on the almajiri sydrome,farmer/ herdsmen palaver.illegal migrants and their settlement.

b- In the Western states their focal point should be on Area boys/father sydrome and robberies.

c- While in the Southern states of Eastern and South South axis must focus on baby factory sydrome,cultism and problem of hatreds to others.

If indeed Nigeria traditional institution is fully given constitutional role to oversee these and other anti- social conducts occurring in Nigeria,I believe 80% of Nigeria’s internal insecurity would be solved.

However, it is important that the great Traditional leaders who went to the National Assembly to formally request for the consideration for this constitutional recognition to go round the 36 Houses of Assembly across Nigeria for more legislative surport for this laudable demand and also the Governors of the 36 states and some important personalities in Government.

So also the National Assembly to use their wisdom to review some provisions contained in the Land Use Act of 1978 and the 1976 Local Government Reform.Also to give due consideration to Late Justice Legbo Report of 2014 Conference.

Nigeria need many ways to tackle the present wave of insecurities and in actual fact, our traditional institution is one of the varitable institution that can checkmate these ills troubling Nigerians.

I wish the Traditional Institution success,while we as citizens must stand up to contribute our own quotas towards the achievement of this great course. May we be guided. Lakpene Yusuf Bida, Esq. reporting for;
