#LG Autonomy: FG, Governors Adjust Implementation to October 2024
ABUJA, NIGERIA – In a bid to address the contentious issue of Local Government (LG) autonomy, the Federal Government and state governors have reached a three-month agreement. The implementation of LG autonomy, initially slated for July, has been postponed to October 2024.
This temporary reprieve allows governors, like Seyi Makinde, to adjust to the new financial arrangements. However, it’s reliably gathered that some governors have allegedly used LGA funds to secure loans from commercial banks, raising questions about financial mismanagement and how long local people have to wait before it begins to feel the real democracy dividend.
The FG’s concession has sparked debate, with critics arguing that it enables governors to maintain control over LG funds, potentially perpetuating corruption and misallocation of resources. Proponents, however, see it as a necessary step towards gradual reform. As the October deadline approaches, the fate of LG autonomy remains uncertain.
