Demilitarize Nigeria for Progress: MNR Tells President Tinubu
Abuja, Nigeria – The Movement for National Reformation (MNR) yesterday in Abuja called on President Tinubu to Demilitarising Nigeria now. This was made during an interview at the Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja. The MNR believes that the military has maintained a grip on the country’s governance, perpetuating a system based on decrees rather than democratic principles.
The movement cited the 1999 Constitution, which they claim has military DNA, as evidence of the military’s influence in undermining our Democracy. They demanded a return to the 1963 Constitution, which they believe is more representative of the people’s desires. The MNR noted that Nigeria has only experienced a people-friendly constitution for two years, three months, and two weeks, and that the military has consistently undermined democratic progress through various decrees.
Specifically, the MNR mentioned some Decree that need to be repelled for Nigeria to make progress. They Include, decree no 1, which suspended the 1966 Constitution; Decree no 34 which transferred powers from the Federating units to the federal government, Decree no 24 of 1999 Constitution that handed over power to civilian rule in 1999 among many other decrees.
The Movement urged the President to take action to restore democratic governance and demilitarize Nigeria by bringing back the 1963 Constitution since the document was only suspended and never abrogated, it remains the only legitimate federal constitution.
