The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reaffirmed that electricity distribution companies (DisCos) are responsible for replacing faulty or obsolete meters at no cost to customers. This announcement was made available to Brooom Nigeria in a public notice issued on Monday, addressing concerns about some DisCos instructing customers to apply and pay for the replacement of faulty meters within their franchise areas.
NERC emphasized that such instructions violate its Order No. NERC/246/2021, which mandates that no customer should be moved to estimated billing due to faulty meters. According to the NERC Order, if a meter is found to be faulty or obsolete, the DisCo must replace it free of charge, unless the damage was caused by the customer.
Key Points:
* DisCos Responsible for Replacement: Electricity distribution companies must replace faulty or obsolete meters at no cost to customers.
* No Estimated Billing: Customers should not be moved to estimated billing due to faulty meters.
* Customer Protection: NERC is committed to protecting customers’ rights and ensuring regulatory standards are followed.
* Reporting Violations: Customers are urged to report any violations by DisCos.
This is coming after the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) interced, ordering Ikeja and Eko electricity distribution companies to halt the planned replacement of Unistar meters unless they fully comply with NERC’s structured replacement policy. The FCCPC aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the metering process, protecting consumers from unfair charges or estimated billing.
