In a move aimed at promoting national identity and pride among young Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu has directed the reinstatement of Nigerian History as a subject in primary and secondary schools, starting this year. This decision was made public by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa during an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday.
The reintroduction of Nigerian History as a subject is expected to address the lack of understanding and appreciation for the country’s rich history and cultural heritage, which was exacerbated by its removal from the school curriculum by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration in 2007.
According to Alausa, the Nigerian Government is committed to ensuring that the subject is taught in all primary and secondary schools across the country. This move is expected to have a positive impact on the education system and help shape the minds of future generations.
President Tinubu’s decision is in line with his previous statement, “any nation which forgets its past has lost a beacon to guide its actions”. The reinstatement of Nigerian History as a subject is a further testament to the importance of preserving and promoting the country’s cultural heritage.
This development is also a continuation of the efforts made by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, which had previously directed the reintroduction of History as a subject in schools, revoking the policy introduced by Obasanjo’s administration.
