In a groundbreaking development, the Lagos State House of Assembly has elected its first female speaker, marking a significant milestone in the state’s political history. ‘A Broom for Every Home Initiative'(BEH) and Brooom Nigeria an online media outfit of BEH congratulate the new speaker on her emergence, expressing hopes that her tenure will pave the way for more women in governance.

RT Hon Mojisola Meranda was born on August 16, 1980, as a descendant of two prominent royal families in Lagos. Taoreed Lawal-Akapo, the late Ojora of Lagos, was her father; and Muinat, her mother, was a princess from the illustrious Oniru kingdom. Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Mojisola’s brother, is the current Oniru of the Iru kingdom.

The group’s statement which was released yesterday highlighted the speaker’s potential to set a new record for Lagos state, becoming the first state to produce a female governor in Nigeria . The new speaker has received the blessings of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and numerous other well-wishers.

BEH wishes the new speaker continued success, good health, and a sound mind as she embarks on her historic tenure. This development is seen as a positive step towards greater representation and inclusivity in Lagos State’s governance.

Interestingly, the Lagos State House of Assembly has had a male speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, since 2015. The election of a female speaker marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
