In a landmark move, the House of Representatives has passed 39 constitutional amendment bills, paving the way for a more transparent, accountable, and inclusive democracy. These bills, which have undergone a second reading, are designed to introduce key reforms in Nigeria’s electoral system, governance structure, and social welfare.
Key Reforms
Some of the notable bills passed include:
** Simultaneous Elections: A bill to conduct general elections for the President, State Governors, National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, and Local Government Area Councils on the same date, promoting efficiency and reducing costs.
** State and Local Government Police: A bill to establish state police and local government police, ensuring greater security and accountability at the grassroots level.
** FCT House of Assembly: A bill to establish the FCT House of Assembly, providing a stronger voice for the Federal Capital Territory.
** Electoral Reforms: Bills to provide for compulsory resignation of national and state executive members of political parties seeking elective government positions, and to vest INEC with the power to conduct local government area council elections, ensuring free and fair elections.
** Inclusive Representation: Bills to provide special seats for physically challenged persons and special interest groups in the House of Representatives, promoting diversity and inclusivity.
** Judicial Reforms: A bill to expand the number of justices of the Supreme Court and enhance service efficiency, ensuring timely and effective justice delivery.
These constitutional amendment bills, which aim to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, promote good governance, and ensure inclusive representation, mark a significant step towards reforming Nigeria’s electoral system and governance structure, promoting a cleaner, more transparent, and accountable democracy.
