Lagos, Nigeria – The Tinubu Government has banned electricity distribution companies and installers from charging customers for smart meters, insisting that all installations under the World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme must be free. This is a promise made during election campaigns and being fulfilled by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, aiming to provide uninterrupted power supply to Nigerians

The initiative aims to close Nigeria’s metering gap with 3.4 million new devices and improve transparency in electricity billing. With over five million customers currently under estimated billing, the move is expected to enhance liquidity in the power sector and encourage consumers to pay their bills.
Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu vowed that any official caught demanding payment will face prosecution. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced this during an inspection of newly imported smart meters at APM Terminals, Apapa, Lagos, stating that any demand for money would be treated as an offense.

This move is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which recognizes energy as the backbone of economic growth and job creation.
