Arising from President Bola Tinubu’s recent appeals to both the Senate and House of Representatives, the 1999 Constitution is set to be amended to pave the way for decentralized policing. The Senate has announced plans to complete the constitutional amendment process for the establishment of state police by the end of 2026, according to Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu, as monitored by Brooom Nigeria’s Chief Media Editor, Prince Babatunde Kolawole.

Speaking at an interfaith breakfast with senators last week, President Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for state police to tackle evolving security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and insurgency. He urged lawmakers to consider amending the Constitution to incorporate state police, citing the importance of grassroots security and rapid response to local threats.
The proposed amendment aims to move policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List, allowing states to establish their own policing structure.
